A Campus Technology Primer

As a new student, there are lots of questions about technology on campus.  On this page, we will try to answer some of the most common questions.

Are there minimum PC requirements if my son or daughter brings their own computer?

Yes!  Clarkson has the following recommendations:  Minimum Computer Specs

What are the software requirements?

The only software your student will need on your personal computer is Microsoft Office. All other software needed for class work is available in University-supported computer labs. All PC’s require an anti-virus software in order to connect to our network. If the PC does not come with anti-virus, a good, free program is Microsoft Security Essentials.

Can students get their computers serviced on campus?

Our certified technician services warranty items on Dell and HP computers. Call the IT HelpDesk for service rates on out-of-warranty machines and machines made by other manufacturers.

Where can I find wireless on campus?

OIT supports wireless in classrooms, group study spaces and all dormitory and suite-style residence halls.  Additionally, all dorm rooms and apartments are equipped with hard-wired Ethernet ports. Students may not bring their own wireless routers.

Can my son or daughter bring a Mac?

Yes, there is a growing community of Mac users on campus. All of our core applications such as email, PeopleSoft and Moodle are known to work well on Macs.

What should we know about file copying and sharing?

Clarkson University treats cases of copyright infringement, to include copying, possessing, sharing or distributing copyrighted works without permission, as theft. Copyrighted works include most music, movies and software. Violators are subject to loss of network privileges, fines, and referral to the Dean of Students for disciplinary action.

Digital Signage

Digital signage replaces traditional paper-based signs with electronics displays. The campus digital signage system provides a way to keep the campus community informed about campus events and services by displaying text, graphics and campus-wide safety alert bulletins on flat-screen monitors. Additionally, the system should begin to curtail the need to print and post paper-based flyers in campus buildings, thereby moving the campus forward on the sustainability front.
